Raymond “Miracle Man” Claypool Receives Tornado Shelter

Written by Marc Brooks

This summer has been a transformative time for many tornado survivors, thanks to the incredible partnership between the Cascade Relief Team and the American Red Cross. Over 100 storm shelters are being installed across counties declared eligible for individual assistance by FEMA, following the harrowing December 2021 tornadoes. Among the grateful recipients is Raymond Claypool, a man whose story of survival and resilience has touched the hearts of many.

Raymond, affectionately known as the “Miracle Man,” was on-site with Josh from the Cascade Relief Team during the installation of his new storm shelter. As the shelter was being securely placed, stories and laughter were shared, and Raymond opened up about his journey, a tale so impactful it was featured in VUE magazine, written by Misti Drew.

The article, titled "Miracle Man," unfolds the gripping narrative of that fateful night in Cambridge Shores, when Raymond and his loyal rescue dog, Hanna, found themselves in the path of a destructive tornado. With little time to react and no secure shelter, Hanna’s instincts kicked in, leading Raymond to the bathroom—a decision that ultimately saved their lives.

Amidst the aftermath of the storm, with their home reduced to rubble, Raymond and Hanna, barefoot and bewildered, navigated the debris-strewn landscape. Their journey led them to a battered fire station, where they received the first of many helping hands. A generous family opened their home to Raymond and Hanna, providing comfort and support during their time of need.

Lisa O’Connor, Raymond’s daughter, rushed to her father's side, overwhelmed with relief and gratitude. She reflected on the remarkable bond between her father and Hanna, acknowledging the outpouring of community support. This story is a powerful testament to the strength found in companionship, and the community’s capacity to come together in times of crisis.

As Raymond embarks on a journey to rebuild, armed with newfound strength and the shelter provided by the Cascade Relief Team, he carries with him the lessons of resilience and the precious bond with Hanna. His story serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting the miraculous survival and unbreakable bond shared between a man and his dog.

At Cascade Relief Team, we are committed to making a lasting impact, providing support beyond immediate disaster relief. Ranging from debris removal to mental health support, our mission is to foster resilience and build stronger communities. We believe in the power of stories like Raymond’s and Hanna’s, stories that inspire and remind us of the strength found in unity.

A heartfelt thank you to all our supporters, survivors, and furry friends who make our work possible. Together, we are building safer and more resilient communities.
